MSW Field Make-Up Activities

Student Instructions: 

  1. Below you will find a list of activities as well as the amount of practicum time you can count for completing each activity.
  2. You are only permitted to complete each activity (1) time during the program (Examples include: If you complete an activity during the Generalist Practicum, you cannot complete it again during the Specialized Practicum nor can you complete an activity in the Spring Semester and again during the Summer). 
  3. A list of these activities will be provided to your Field Instructors and Task Supervisors on request so they can accurately approve your timesheets. 
  4. You will be required to present your documentation of completion to your Field Instructors and Task Supervisors.  
  5. You must also upload a copy of your documentation of completion by clicking here.

Activities

Task Hours
1.  Using the internet or other resources you have available, create a list of websites and resources for social workers.  Include a brief summary of of each of the resource.  -Maximum Number of 10 resources allowed.  30 minutes per resource.
2.  Using the internet or other resources you have available, create a list of community resources that can be used by your agency to refer clients to further services.  Include a brief summary of each of the resources-  Maximum Number of 20 resources allowed.  30 minutes per resource.

3.  Read and summarize the following article:  Eye on Ethics: When Politics Enters the Room.

Additionally, answer the following questions regarding the article:

  1. Do you agree with the article, why or why not?
  2. How does the political process intersect with ethical social work practice?
  3. How can you use this information in your placement?
  4. Where else can you go to find more information?

4.  Complete the Social Worker Technology Self-Assessment adapted from  Hitchcock, L.I. & Jones, N.P. (2018, October 30). BPD Technology Committee’s Technology Assessment Checklist for Social Work Practice [Blog Post]

On a separate piece of paper do the following:

Social Worker Technology Self-Assessment

● Knowledge & Skills: How knowledgeable are you about the technology that you use in your professional practice (i.e. could you explain privacy settings in Facebook to a client)? How familiar are you with online behaviors such as bullying, trolling, binge watching videos, etc? How would you rate your digital literacy skills (i.e. spotting fake news; awareness of and ability to use software, apps, and devices; netiquette; social networking, etc)?

● Technology Use: What technology do you use and how in your social work practice?

● Privacy & Confidentiality: How you protect client confidentiality related to the use of technology (i.e. use of encryption software, HIPAA compliant electronic records, etc)? How do you protect client privacy related to the use of technology? If you have a website, Facebook page/group, blog, how do you inform clients about posting, self-identification, and confidentiality/privacy risk?

● Informed Consent: Do you use informed consent with clients about using technology to communicate, interact, etc? If so, how?

● Social Media Policy: What are your social media professional practices? Do you have a social media policy?

● Professional Learning Network: Do you have a professional learning network? How do you stay current about tech trends (i.e. crisis texting services, telehealth, etc)?

● Organizational Context: How does your agency support technology use (i.e. training, provides adequate tech, etc)? Do you have a risk management plan for your technology in place of employment?

● Financial: What type of financial transactions do you use your phone/computer for? How do you track passwords? Do you use a fingerprint for financial transactions?

Once completed, please write a reflective summary of your technology usage skills and include ways how you plan to strengthen your remote learning. Once you complete your reflection, discuss your technology self-assessment with your field instructor/faculty liaison.

5. Create an educational handout to share with future social work practicum students.

Each concept/idea handout should include:

  • Definition of the concept/idea and its relation to social work practice in your agency
  • The key reason why the concept/idea is important to social work practice in your agency
  • How you can recognize the concept/idea (characteristics)
  • What you can do to promote social work practice about your concept/idea (tips, strategies, tools)
  • Two key academic publications where the concept/idea is used and the significance of the concept/idea in those publications
  • Two key non-academic publications where the concept/idea is used and importance of the concept/idea in those publications
  • The personal and borrowed quote that demonstrates the significance of the concept/ideas in social work practice.

6.  Read the blog post on Compassion Fatigue and answer the following questions:

  1. What is compassion fatigue?
  2. How is it caused?
  3. What are the signs?
  4. How is it different from burnout?
  5. What can be done to combat it?

6.  Develop a handout to give to clients that may visit your agency that provides them with information on services that may assist them during the pandemic.  Focus specifically on services that would offer COVID Testing, COVID Vaccine information, employment opportunities, financial support, food, medication, rent/housing support, utilities, debt relief, and any personal protective equipment (PPE) needs that they may have.

7.  Interview a social worker, either inside or outside your agency and ask the following questions (Interview can be zoom, face to face, or telephone--you cannot email them the questions and have them email them back):

  1. How would you define social work?
  2. What drew you to the social work profession?
  3. What is your current role?
  4. What is the favorite part of your “job”?
  5. What are supports available to you in your workplace/organization?
  6. If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and how does it relate to social work?
  7. What has been one of your most significant learning opportunities in social work practice?
  8. How do you practice self-care?
  9. What advice can you give new social workers entering the field?
  10. What is your guiding value, and why is it meaningful for you?
  11. What do you wish the general public knew about social work?
  12. Who would you like to nominate to be interviewed next (you can suggest multiple people)?
  13. Where you have completed your social work degree program?
  14. What attracted you to this role
  15. What is the biggest challenge you face/faced in your “job”?
  16. What other social work roles and jobs have you had in the past?
  17. What inspires (empowers) you to keep going in your practice?
  18. What social or global concern(s) are you currently most passionate about (and why)?
  19. What does self-care mean to you?
  20. What values do you bring into your work?
  21. Is there anything that you would like to share about yourself or professional self that you would like to identify here?
  22. What have you geeked out about social work recently?
  23. What theory drives your practice?
  24. How do you use creativity in your work?
  25. What is your favorite movie/song/poem/book that you recommend others to learn about your job
  26. If you could time travel, what would you tell yourself when you were a student or when you first graduated?
  27. Do you have the words of wisdom for those who are contemplating the social work profession?
  28. What do you wish the general public knew about social work?
  29. You can add additional questions based on your interest.

 2 hours.

8.  Listen to any of the podcasts listed on the Social Worker Podcast  website and write a 1/2 to 1 page summary of the podcast. -Maximum number of 10 podcasts allowed. 

1 hour each. 

9.  Complete the University of Montanna Training Modules located by  clicking hereand submitting your completed training certificate.

1 hour each (no limit).

10.  Read the Best Practices in Videoconferencing Based Telmental Health article and write a one page summary.

 

2 hours.

11.  Watch the Telebehavioral Health-What Every Provider Needs to Know video and provide a one page summary. 

2 hours.

12.  Complete the SAMHSA Creating Safe Scenes online training.  Instructions:  Fill in your name and email address and hit "continue."  Then at the end of the training print your "Thank You" page.

2 hours.

13.  Watch the CCP Training Videos and write a short summary.  These videos are geared toward natural disasters but are applicable during the COVID Pandemic:

30 minutes each. 

14.  Liberty University Telemental Health Training.  Instructions:  Scroll to the bottom and you will see "Ethical Considerations for Tele-Mental Health Parts 1, 2, and Quiz for CEs.  Complete Parts 1 and 2 and pass the quiz.  Provide a copy of your quiz results.  

5 hours.

15.  Institute for Research, Education, and Training in Addictions, Assessment and Treatment of Adolescent Marijuana Abuse and Dependence training.  Instructions:  You will have to register for the site and then log in to access the training.  

1 hour.

16.  Institute for Research, Education, and Training in Addictions, Electronic Tools for Use in the Continuum of Care for Patients With Addiction training.  Instructions:  You will have to register for the site 9f you did not register in the training above) and then log in to access the training.  

1 hour.

17.  Betty Ford Hazeldon Webinar Series.  Instructions:  You will have to register for each webinar but they are "on demand" and once you register they will display on the screen.  When you are in the webinar, there will be a smaller box that will appear for the certificate.  Once the elapsed time has passed the certificate will be available.  If you do not see the box, in the bottom of the screen close the the middle there is a certificate button you can click to maximize and minimize the box.  You ma have to click it on and off a couple of times to get the checkmark to turn green.  If the webinar has no certificate available, you will need to write a 1/2 page summary of the webinar.  

1 hour each (no limit).

18.  Watch the instructional video on "Creating a Bitmoji Virtual Scene with Google Slides" by clicking here  .  Once you have watched the video, use this to create your own virtual office.  Once your virtual office is created, paste the link to the virtual office in a word document and upload that document to the Student Upload section highlighted at the very top of this page. 

The purpose of this assignment is to help you think about creative ways to set up telehealth services with clients. 

Up to 10 hours (depends on how long it takes you to complete the assignment).

19.  Complete the "Self-Care Assessments, Exercises and Activities" located on the University of Buffalo School of Social Work Website found by clicking here  .  You will need to read the information found in both the "Self-Assessments:  Checklists and Measures" and "Self-Care Exercises and Activities" prompts.  Once you have read this, you will need to write a 2-3 page summary of the information found in the prompts and which ones you would be interested in implementing.  You will need to then upload your summary to the Student Upload section highlighted at the very top of this page. 

4 hours.

20.  Review the "Conversations About Culture:  Video and Lesson Plan" located on the University of Buffalo School of Social Work Website found by clicking here .  Once you have reviewed all of the information complete the "Reflective Exercises" and then upload your completed exercise to the Student Upload section highlighted at the very top of this page. 

6 hours.

21.  Complete the "Digital innovation in social care and social work"  online training located on the Open University website found by clicking here .  Once you have reviewed the training, you will need to write a 2-3 page summary of the information found in the training and which ones you would be interested in implementing.  You will need to then upload your summary to the Student Upload section highlighted at the very top of this page. 

3 hours. 

22.  TIC Training Center, Trauma Informed Care Trainings.  Complete any or all of the trainings listed on the website.  You can access the trainings by clicking  here.   

You may count the actual time it takes you to complete the training modules.  No limit!

23.  Educational Videos, Webinars, and Online Trainings offered by Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky.  Complete any/all of the trainings listed on their website.  You can access the trainings by clicking here.

24.  Telemental Health Best Practices Overview and Webinar.  This is a free online training that is 1.5 hours in length.  You can access the information by clicking here. 

For credit you will need to watch the webinar and then write a 2-3 page summary of the information found in the webinar and which ones you would be interested in implementing.  You will need to then upload your summary to the Student Upload section highlighted at the very top of this page.

25.  Child Development.  This is an online training in which you can count 2.0 hours of practicum time for completion. You will generate a training certificate at the end and Dr. Edwards will also automatically receive a copy. 26.  Forensic Interviewing. This is an online training in which you can count 2.0 hours of practicum time for completion.
